"the tall man on his bike" is a suite of 9 songs inspired by my father. I am sure he would frown at much of what I am singing. For my defense, I will claim that not all of them are about him. To start with, some are about me. And others are more extrapolations of what fathers could be.
The painting on the left was done by my daughter Camille. It was a favorite of my parents. I thought it fitted well with the title I choose for my album, which is based on the nick name many children gave to my father in the Belgian coast town of "Le Coq-sur-Mer" were he spent so many days.
And why you did that remains a mystery A mystery to me Lonely choice!
The Rule
There's no word and there's no smile There is no cheat and there is no laugh
The rule is the rule and there is the fun
We play the game for the game And the game to kill time
There is no cheat and there is no laugh The rule is the rule and there is the fun
King of Spade and Queen of Heart
The rule is the rule and there is the fun
Dry as a Stone
You gave me all So why do I feel empty? You gave me all you had So why can't I remember
From all these long week-ends Along these empty shores No single memory I can relate to you
Maybe I'd been an other man If you had been different father Maybe I'd been an other man If we had shared a little more
Oh, you've done all the right things Gave me the good advices You gave me all the chances Done what needed to be
Maybe I'd been an other man If we had shared a little more Maybe I'd been an other man If you had been different father If you had been different father
I think it was alright I think it wasn't bad But I am dry as a stone And when I think of you There is no tears in my eyes
Maybe I'd been an other man If you had been different father Maybe I'd been an other man If we had shared a little more If you had showed a little more
A Way with Nothing
The sun, the wind And an empty beach
It is so easy to please with nothing It is so easy, to be fine, to be fine
The sun, the wind And the sound of the crashing wave The sun, the wind And the sound of the crashing wave
It is so easy to please with nothing It is so easy, to be fine, to be fine
Some will blame for nothing Somehow they will be right But if you feel fine There is a way with nothing And it could be mine But no all year long But no all year long
A Better Man
Put you doubts aside Oh, put your fears aside Let's be a better man Let's be a better man
Put your self-made limitations Your lack of ambitions You stupid inhibitions Pu them all on the side Let's be a better man Let's be a better man
Oh, let's be what you can be Meet their expectations Fill the shoes, meet the goals Let's be a better man Let's be a better man
Let's be no star, no superman But let's be a better man A better man, a better man, a better man
Put you doubts aside Put your fears aside Let's be a better man, a better man Let's be a better man, better man
So let's do what needs to be done Yes, that alone would be awesome Let's be a better man, a better man Let's be a better man
Let's be a better man
Simply Totally
You had just one goal in life Nothing mattered more to you That's the dream of every wife
She happened to be my mother I know for sure you loved me too Like my sister and brother But with them you struggled more They were longing for much more
Is there any more to say? You simply, totally loved her That's the dream of every wife You simply, totally loved her
You closed her eyes And now you are next to her And my sister and brother I know you believed in it So I hope your's were fulfilled
You had just one goal in life You simply, totally loved her
The Cross
You had all reasons to be broken You had all reasons to complain
About my sister and brother About the way you helped my mother You had all reasons to complain You had all reasons
You had all reasons to be broken You had all reasons to complain
Somehow your life became a cross But it didn't came across Somehow your life became a cross But it didn't came across
You never complained You often explained
And when the days became like years And when the years became like life
You had all reasons to be broken You had all reasons to complain
You were still holding it so quiet You were still holding it so quiet
So Happy
We may think If we had helped you figure out An attractive future with us You wouldn't have given all hope
So Happy we could help you out So Happy, happy, happy me
Some may say If we had taken the time To give you a better life You wouldn't have been so bored
So Happy we could help you out So Happy, happy, happy me
So Happy, so happy So Happy, happy Oh Dady, dady
Oh Dady, dady
Oh, so Happy we could help you out So Happy, happy. I am so happy.
We may think If we had helped you figure out An attractive future with us You wouldn't have given all hope
So Happy we could help you out So Happy, happy, happy me
So Happy we could help you out So Happy, happy, happy me. Happy me?
An Angel
I entered in the room And there she was An angel that came over To help you through
With you into her arms I was confused Cos if you were my father Who was she then?
Sail away dear father Back in my mothers' arms And I am left behind With her sight in my eyes
Did you became a child About to leave In a tender embrace To paradise?
So I left you behind What could I do? Confused about my role And her beauty
Sail away dear father Back in my mother's arms And I am left behind With her sight in my eyes
